A mystery book with a positive message for pre-teen readers by Darby Patterson
Meow.org, The Cat-Napping Caper - Fighting Crime and Bullies
Hey there! If you're in the 4th, 5th or 6th grade, I wrote this book just for you. It's a
mystery about a group of friends who call themselves 'The Crew' and dozens of cats
that suddenly disappear.

Okay - they aren't the most popular kids in their school, but they each are smart and
talented, and together they are unstoppable! There are some kids at their school who
do try to get in their way - a beefy school bully who Elzbeth calls "Rusty Booger" and
some very 'catty' girls (I mean no insult to cats).  But nothing is more important to the
crew than solving the mystery of the cats gone missing.

Elzbeth's aunt is a foster parent to cats which she carefully adopts out to very
excellent homes.  Elzbeth tells the rest of The Crew that so many kittens have
disappeared from the adoptive homes that it just can't be an accident. Trudy, Ruben
and Joe are convinced and they make a plan to uncover the truth and rescue the furry
feline friends from the fumbling fiends (sorry, I couldn't help myself).
can't  help being who she is and just learns in very different ways than most kids. Like,
Elzbeth would have a very hard time reading this mystery that's all about her because
reading is her yuckiest subject. And, she even writes her letters backwards! So Elzbeth
gets bullied and teased and fights back like a feisty kitten.

Her friends have more obvious differences, but they also have some super abilities -
like extreme use of technology, math wizardry and brilliant minds. None of this matters,
though, when it comes to school bullying because bullies don't get it! No matter - The
Crew is on the job, unraveling the mystery while the bungling burglars plot to capture
even more cats.
You can Contribute to the Cat-Napping Caper

I've been happy to find out that kids your age really like characters in my mystery book -
some they like better than others, of course. I mean, nobody loves the bad guys (cause
they're not supposed to) but readers do think they are pretty funny! And poor Rusty Booger
and his bully friends - well, only a mother could love.  But, kids like you have come up with
great ideas for:
  •  Another book plot
  •   Drawings of the characters
  •   A BUNCH of corny Ruben jokes
  •    Personal stories about how it feels to be bullied

I'll have special pages where you an see your ideas, drawings and writing online. You might
need some help sending your pictures (or maybe you are like Joe the computer genius in the
book and can teach
adults computer tricks). If you want to write about some school bullies
you have known, sharing your story might help another bullied child - or maybe change a
school bully into a nice person. Who knows? The personal stories about being bullied can be
anonymous (secret, duh) or we can just use your first name.
What's SO Special about The Crew?
Elzbeth and her friends often get unwanted attention at school because each is somehow different from their
classmates. Unfortunately, that means bullies come out of the bushes to make being in school a challenge. For example,
Elzbeth can't seem to sit still and she's forever staring out the window of her classroom. That behavior gets her in big
trouble with her teacher who thinks Elzbeth is trying to disrupt class. But Elzbeth
